Kylie Greenan from Richmond, AustraliaHow do I draw a symbol of someone sitting here with their jaw hitting the floor... would it go something like 13 Oct 2008 5:09am @Kylie Greenan: :-) gossiping about me eh ;-)) just kidding... your comment is marvelous and I'd be more than happy to explain. The key is: looking stupid with the tripod set up in the dark, remote control in hand and just waiting for the right light :-) set your whitebalance as accurate as possible, next I try to meter the light at the brightest spot, prepare the bracketing (3 exposures), focus and recompose. Shuttertime for these were 2, 5 and 30 secs. Not an hdr though but just some slight blending afterwards in PS in order to get the sky texture from the darkest one. Of course, some color correction and sharpening as always. But later on I only took 1 exposure (45seconds)when it was even darker and it gave me more or less the same result but with the sea looking even more 'milkier' :-) But the most important thing is imho, the light. Minutes after the sun has set (and it can take up to half an hour), there is a bleuish, purpleish colorcast in the sky (patience can be a virtue sometimes:-). With a longer shutterspeed, this can give a nice effect. Of course, the sky should be pretty clear otherwise it's not very visible. Another option for that satin water look is to get a pretty strong ND filter..still waiting for my order to be delivered..3 months already.. :-( But again, nothing beats good light. 2 things to take along if you do this: patience and a warm jacket :-) now, pick up your jaw again ;-) @Marzia: thanks so much, Marzia! @Perikoperikon: muchas gracias! Giovanni from Milan, ItalyWonderful shot!!! Love the angle, the colours and the milky water. Bravo, bravissimo! 5 stars! 13 Oct 2008 9:02am @Giovanni: Grazie mille, Giovanni! João Mourão from Amadora, Portugalamazing shot and scenario. Tremendous colors. Five stars. 13 Oct 2008 9:53am @João Mourão: thank you so much! very kind of you. Sangram from Mumbai, Indiabeautifully shot.. the long exposure seems to have made a soothing effect on this image. 13 Oct 2008 10:10am zOOm from Paris, FranceComme une passerelle invisible. Superbe photo vraiment. Passerelle invisible...j'aime bien ton interpretation. Moi, je suis nul à trouver un titre pour une scene pareille :-) @navin harish: Thanks so much, Navin! Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaYeah, dropped jaw like Kylie said, wow, how in the world did you do that? it's heaven 13 Oct 2008 1:20pm @Lorraine: Thanks, Lorraine :-) Did this one standing in the dark on a beach with a tripod and a long shutter speed. Must have looked quite ridiculous but it was fun. Of course, I had a lot of luck getting a nice sunset with clear sky which renders the sky blue/purple about half an hour after the sun disappeared in the horizon. Evelyne Dubos from Le Mans, FranceUne compo qui donne beaucoup d'impact à l'image. La perspective de cette allée de poteau se jetant dans la mer accompagne notre regard. Et les couleurs toutes en douceur sont très belles. 13 Oct 2008 2:37pm @Evelyne Dubos: je te remercie beaucoup, Evelyne! Zion from Francetrés belle image, la symétrie marche bien et la pose longue apporte un gros plus ! 13 Oct 2008 3:28pm @Zion: merci bcp, Zion Francesc B. from région parisienne, FranceUne invitation à s'évader au large... magnifique ! 13 Oct 2008 3:44pm @Francesc B.: Merci bcp, Francesc! @Ana Lúcia: thanks, Ana! @Morgane: merci bcp, Morgane! @peter: thanks, Peter Pradeep from Chennai, IndiaBeautiful...everything is perfect about this shot. How long was the exposure? Just curious :) 13 Oct 2008 5:56pm @Pradeep: I took 3 exposures for this particular one. 3, 5 and 30 seconds. with some blending afterwards. (no hdr). But I had more or less the same effect with 45sec exposure time later on. Used a circular polarizer as well. And it was dark by the way. Just the purple afterglow of a sunset which gives this nice color when taken with long exposure. Thanks for the nice comment! R. from Braga/Lx, PortugalFantastic! At first I felt the loneliness of the landscape but somehow you can't help feeling tranquil by the calm of the ocean... I don't know if you ever took a photography of Mare Tranquillitatis on the Moon but you sure took a shot from the one on Earth... 13 Oct 2008 6:26pm @R.: Thanks so much, R. I already tried to capture to moon but it never gave me the desired result. Or my focal range is not large enough :-) So, I try to stick to the seas on earth for now :-) amy from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaPERFECT! You've got it all in this one suvni; mood, lighting, framing, comp... all excellent. 13 Oct 2008 6:31pm @amy: thanks for making me blush ;-) @Ted: Thanks, Ted. It required some patience to say the least :-) Sylvain from Trois Rivieres, CanadaGreat image ! 14 Oct 2008 1:01am @Sylvain: thanks, Sylvain. It's indeed not the most original idea :-) but I wanted to have a try at it myself as well. @Sandrine: ...and cold :-) Thanks so much, Sandrine! Kylie Greenan from Richmond, Australia:- } can't do it!! WOW, thank so much for the fine explanation... when are you running classes?... I'M DEAD SERIOUS! Can I order some patience online? Oh, I got my ND8 and gradient filter a couple of weeks ago and used it for the first time last night, I found it changed the beautiful colour in the light, need to use it some more, to see. I will be interested to see how you go and what you think of it. I hope it arrives soon! Thanks again for the great detailed response :o) 14 Oct 2008 2:23am @Kylie Greenan: :-) funny girl. and now i'm really looking forward to see some of your pictures taken with the nd filter. I'm probably dropping my order and just going to look for it myself...because i'm not that patient :-) Concerning the explanation, you're very welcome but I'm just a beginner and not nearly skilled enough to give a decent explanation. But open your google, search for Andy Mumford, and you'll get a whole bunch of explanation :-) for every picture in his gallery on deviantart, he describes his technique used. Very helpful. I should read it one day..when I get my damn filters :-) JJ from Jersey City, United StatesI have to tell you when I opened this I just sat there admiring such a beautiful shot, sat here stunned for a good five minutes, this is brilliant love it 14 Oct 2008 2:28am @JJ: :-)) you mean, your internet connection froze :-) Thanks so much, JJ. I'm flattered. Kylie Greenan from Richmond, Australiaoh you legned, thanks! I certainly will look at his page and info now. Thank you Thank you Thank you :o) The image I will post on Friday probably is without the filter, I took it off, was just experimenting as the sky was quite bright and the foreground darker, but it certainly didnt work I don't think, I haven't taken it out of the cam yet but I ended up re-shooting without the filter. I am going to try and get lost down the beach I think this weekend, I want to TRY and do some dramatic b&w stuff which is why I bought them in the first place. Oh.. and you a beginner... HAHHHAHAHAHA FUNNY BOY! BTW I am not posting this weekend, I need a weekend to get some photos and reading done etc, I am falling a bit behind after Caturday. But I will be sure to drop by and visiting you anyway!! 14 Oct 2008 2:51am @Kylie Greenan: Thanks so much, Kylie. Hope you have a lot of fun at the beach and I'm looking forward to see your dramatic b&w work. DarkElf from Perth, Australiabrilliant composition here! the wooden poles lead in perfectly towards the dreamy background! the subtle colours are so calming as well - superb work! 14 Oct 2008 4:00am @DarkElf: Thanks so much, DarkElf. I find those wooden poles intriguing. Don't ask me why :-) sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesBeautiful image of the sea. I love the shades of blue. 14 Oct 2008 4:50am @sherri: Thanks so much, Sherri. Very nice of you to hop on over to my little corner @Eric Rousset: Je te remercie, Eric. Je voulais deja photographier une vue pareille depuis longtemps. @Laurent: Merci bcp, Laurent!
